Bobbin & Spool
Meet Claire Sutton, the maker helping women shine, one bag at a time
Bobbin & Spool creates one-of-a-kind bags designed to celebrate individuality. Handcrafted in a garden studio in Downton, each piece pairs bold designer prints with durable waxed canvas or oilskin made to handle everyday life – and the great British weather!
No two bags are the same, that’s all part of their appeal. Claire wants her customers to feel confident, organised, in control and to be recognised for their individuality and how special they are.
A business shaped by real life
Bobbin & Spool began with a moment many people will recognise.
As a part-time nurse and mum of two teenage girls, the shift in Claire’s life when her youngest daughter no longer wanted to be walked to school sparked a bigger question: what comes next? Rather than returning to full-time nursing, she picked up sewing again as a way to unwind. What started as a creative outlet quickly became something more.
Through her work in clinics, Claire had seen how life changes – from children changing schools and growing up to the menopause – can affect a woman’s confidence and sense of identity. That experience now sits at the very heart of the business.
Each bag is designed to do more than carry your belongings. It’s there to help you feel confident, organised and unapologetically yourself. A bag as unique as you are.
Made with care, colour and character
Every bag is handmade using carefully chosen designer fabrics combined with waxed canvas or oilskin. They are built to last, but just as importantly, they are made to stand out.
Many customers are drawn to the ‘design your own’ experience at the market. You can choose your fabric, colours and details, creating something that reflects your (or a loved one’s) personal story and style.
From bold prints to subtle linings with personal meaning, every combination has a story behind it.
Stories behind every stitch
Talking to customers face-to-face is a big part of what makes market days special for Claire.
Whether it’s a gift for a loved one or a treat for yourself, there’s often a story behind each choice. One customer chose a giraffe-print lining to remind her of time spent living in Africa. Others pick colours linked to important moments or memories.
These conversations turn each purchase into something much more meaningful – a shared moment of respect and gratitude, not just a sale.
Why Second Sundays matters
Trading at Second Sundays has helped Claire - and Bobbin & Spool - grow in confidence and connect with a wider community of women on similar journeys.
Meeting customers in person, hearing their stories and seeing them engage with the design process has shaped the business in new and exciting ways. It’s also led to new ideas, fresh inspiration and returning customers who bring along friends and family.
